A new clinic is to open its doors at University Hospital Aintree this week to help improve the health and well-being of lung cancer patients. The clinic is a joint venture between Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Woodlands Hospice, Citizens Advice Sefton and Macmillan Health Outreach and will be held at the Trust’s Marina Dalglish Centre. Patients will be able to access the service, which has been funded for 12 months by Macmillan as part of the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative as part of a drive to improve the ongoing services and advice provided to those living with, and beyond, cancer. As one of 15 pilot sites around the country, the new Lung Health and Wellbeing Clinic will be the only site to be uniquely dedicated to patients suffering from lung cancer, which is the second most common cancer in the UK, affecting over 1.63 million people.
With Liverpool and Knowsley being in the top three for incidences of Lung Cancer in the North West, the new clinic will play a vital role in ensuring that patients get the care and support they need to lead as healthy and active a life as possible, for as long as possible. Jo Bayly, the Lead AHP for the Merseyside and Cheshire Cancer Network, said: “The new clinic has been set up as part of the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative, which aims to improve the support provided to cancer sufferers, during and following treatment.
Unlike most clinics, which primarily focus on the physical wellbeing and treatment of patients, the new health and wellbeing clinic will go a step further, providing advice on rehabilitation and ongoing care. The type of support provided will vary but might include planned programmes to develop self management skills, practical and emotional coping skills or advice on lifestyle changes. "As a specialist team, we are pleased to be able to offer such services which can only help in our efforts to minimise the not just physical, but psychological, emotional and social effects that cancer can have on sufferers. "We are all eagerly awaiting the opening of the clinic.”
